First Edition of Marguerite Henry's best-known work, signed by her and artist Wesley Dennis
Henry, Marguerite. Brighty of the Grand Canyon. Rand McNally, Chicago, 1953. This copy of the book features signatures on the half-title page of both the author, Marguerite Henry, and the book's artist, Wesley Dennis, as well as an attached bookplate signed by Henry.

VG HB in VG DJ, protected by mylar cover. First Edition ("Edition of 1953 | A" listed on copyright page). Inscribed by Henry on half-title page ("To Marilyn | [horseshoe] | Happy Trails | [sig]") and signed by Dennis. In addition, a bookplate signed by Henry has been pasted onto the half-title page. The bookplate has a closely clipped drawing of a horseshoe labeled "Misty's Hoofograph" with Henry's signature in the middle. 222 p. illus.: col. title page; 25 cm. Red cloth over boards with black title and drawing on front cover and title on spine. Size: Octavo (8vo; up to 9 3/4" / 20-25 cm tall). 222 pages. Text block is tight, bright and unmarked. Binding is tight; corners sharp, but showing some minor shelf wear. Unclipped DJ in VG condition, with some wear at the corners and around the edges. There are some small (about 1/4") chips at the bottom corner and top fold of the front panel and at the bottom of the rear panel. Illustrator: Dennis, Wesley. Quantity Available: 1. Wiggins, Kate Douglas. Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1903. Although this is a reprint and an ex-library copy, it is an early reprint that was inscribed by Wiggins upon her visit to the school.

VG HB with no DJ, inscribed by Wiggins on the free front endpaper: "For the Library | of the Wadleigh High | School. | Souvenir of my | visit - October 27th | 1910 | [Sig]. This is the first reprint edition from the plates of the First Edition, 4th state plates (with copyright notice as "Published October 1903," p. 325, line 9 as "Don't turn in at the side;" and p. 327, line 13 changed to "October sun."). Size: Duodecimo (12 mo; up to 7 3/4" / 17.5-20 cm tall). 327 pages. Text block is tight, bright and unmarked. Binding is tight; the corners are slightly turned in with the bottom front and back covers bumped, spine tanned from exposure. There are two 1/4" vertical cuts at the bottom of the spine, resulting in a 3/8" horizontal tear. There are two 1/4" vertical cuts at the top of the spine, as well. There is a double rectangle border embossed into the front cover, surrounding a pastedown that reproduces the design of the original Houghton Mifflin cover, but in green, rather than teal. The paste-down shows wear from rubbing and has two spots with some surface paper loss (one affecting the top of the "B" in Rebecca). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1 lb 1 oz. VG Copy of 2nd ed., published the year after the first ed. 314 p.; 21cm. Page scans of identical copy at the University of Lausanne available from Google Books. Size: Octavo (8vo; up to 9 3/4" / 20-25 cm tall). 314 pages. Text is in German. Text block is in excellent condition: tight and clean with no foxing. Cover is worn, though the binding is tight & no breaks in the leather; title panel on spine is missing, though the stamp of title is visible; leather missing from the top corners and paper is starting to pull away from the boards. VG HB in VG DJ, protected by archival polyester cover. Santi lists at $50-$100. Size: Octavo (8vo; up to 9 3/4" / 20-25 cm tall). Text block is tight, bright and unmarked. Pages 21-34 are printed on a slightly different stock and show some tanning; the other pages are white. Blue textured paper spine shows a small (3/4") closed tear. Unclipped Dust jacket, which has the printed " Golden  spine", has three defects: (1) 1/2" sticker scar at the upper right, affecting a little of the decoration around the front panel, (2) a 1/4" closed tear at the bottom edge of the front panel and (3) a 1" closed tear at the bottom edge of the back panel (the two tears have been repaired on the reverse with archival non-acidic tape). List on back goes to #34. The "This book belongs to" bookplate printed on the inside front cover is blank. Page edges are stained purple.
